Not all diapers are created equal. A diaper designed for a newborn is very different from one made for an active toddler. Understanding these differences helps you choose the right product at every stage — and avoid unnecessary leaks, rashes, and waste.
Newborn Diapers
Newborn diapers are engineered for the first few weeks of life. Key features include:
- Umbilical cord notch: A U-shaped cutout keeps the diaper away from the healing cord stump
- Ultra-soft materials: Newborn skin is extremely sensitive; top layers are gentler and hypoallergenic
- Wetness indicator: Many newborn diapers include a colour-changing strip so you know when to change
- Smaller fit: Designed for babies up to 5 kg with a snug leg seal to contain frequent, runny stools
- Higher change frequency: Newborns need 8–12 changes per day, so absorbency per hour matters more than total capacity
Toddler Diapers
Once your baby is mobile, diaper needs shift significantly:
- Stretch panels: Flexible sides accommodate crawling, standing, and walking
- Higher absorbency: Toddlers urinate more volume less frequently, so diapers need greater total capacity
- Stronger fasteners: Resealable tabs that survive an active toddler pulling at them
- Pull-up style options: Training pants become relevant as potty training begins
- Larger coverage area: Bigger fit for babies 9 kg and above
The In-Between Stages
Between newborn and toddler, babies go through several size transitions (Size 1 through Size 4). At each stage, look for:
- Improved leg cuff design as babies become more active
- Increased overnight absorbency from around 4 months
- More durable tabs as babies start grabbing at their diapers
When to Switch
Switch diaper types when your baby:
- Exceeds the weight range on the current pack
- Starts crawling or pulling to stand (usually 7–9 months)
- Shows interest in the potty (typically 18–36 months)
