Newborn Care Essentials: What You Actually Need in the First Month

The first month with a newborn is overwhelming — and the baby product market doesn't make it easier. Every brand claims their product is a must-have. Here's an honest, practical list of what you actually need to care for your newborn in the first 30 days.

Diapering Essentials

Diapering will be your most frequent activity — up to 12 times a day in the early weeks.

  • Newborn diapers: Stock 1–2 packs initially. Don't overbuy — babies grow fast. Browse our newborn diaper range.
  • Size 1 diapers: Have a pack ready for when your baby outgrows newborn size (usually within 2–4 weeks for average-weight babies)
  • Baby wipes: Fragrance-free and alcohol-free. You'll use these at every change. Our wipes collection has gentle options for newborn skin.
  • Nappy bags: For hygienic disposal, especially when out of the house
  • Changing mat: Waterproof and easy to wipe clean
  • Barrier cream: Zinc oxide cream to prevent nappy rash from day one

Feeding Essentials

  • If breastfeeding: Nursing pillow, breast pads, nipple cream
  • If formula feeding: Bottles, steriliser, formula
  • Burp cloths: You'll need more than you think — at least 6–8

Sleep Essentials

  • Moses basket or crib: Safe sleep surface next to your bed
  • Firm, flat mattress: No pillows, bumpers, or loose bedding for newborns
  • 2–3 fitted sheets: For quick middle-of-the-night changes
  • Swaddle blankets: Help newborns feel secure and sleep longer

Bathing Essentials

  • Baby bath tub: A small, supportive tub makes bathing safer
  • Mild baby wash: Fragrance-free and tear-free formula
  • Soft hooded towels: At least 2
  • Cotton wool or soft cloths: For cleaning the face and cord stump area

What You Don't Need Right Away

Save your money on these until your baby is older:

  • Baby monitor (if you're in a small home)
  • Baby food maker (not needed until 6 months)
  • Jumperoo or activity centre
  • Shoes (newborns don't walk)
  • Large quantities of any single diaper size

The Golden Rule

Buy the minimum to start, see what your baby actually needs, then restock. Every baby is different. The essentials above will cover 95% of what you need in month one — everything else can wait.

Start with our diapers and wipes — the two things you'll reach for most in those early weeks.
